World Biodiversity Day – May 22
In commemoration of World Biodiversity Day (May 22), the officers of the Warakapola Divisional Secretariat took a special initiative.
As part of this effort, a special T-shirt was designed for the staff of our office to raise public awareness about the Bandula Barb, a rare and endangered freshwater fish species that is endemic to the Galapitamada area of the Warakapola Division.
Through the logo displayed on the T-shirt, the message “Let’s Protect Bandula Barb” is conveyed to the wider community. The initiative aims to promote awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation and to encourage responsibility towards protecting our unique native species.
It is encouraging to note that, due to the dedicated efforts of officers of the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the continuous commitment of local residents to conservation activities, the population of the Bandula Barb has now increased to more than 800 individuals.
The Bandula Barb is an environmental treasure and a source of pride for our region. Protecting this valuable natural heritage for future generations is a responsibility shared by us all.
